Some small modifications were made to the prototype design and construction of the race vehicle begun soon after. Daryl King, Dean Williams and Wilsy constructed almost 6 hours a day – 6 days a week as they raced to complete their vehicle almost four weeks early. Whip It had a most memorable Display and Presentation too, which saw a rendition of the Cold Chisel classic: ‘Working Class Man’, remastered to the words of ‘Carbon Fibre Frame’. Move over Jimmy, these boys deserved an Aria.
After a qualifying that saw both the Sav and Whip It running as smooth as silk, race day came and Whip It rode a solid and calculated race. They did manage to roll the vehicle at least once though, and the battle scars were beginning to show by race end.
Although Whip It did not win the trial, it has played a very important part of Bendigo Youth Racing’s history. It was this vehicle that reassured people that carbon was strong enough to survive a race, provided the design was right and the joints were good.
