2000 - Whip It

2000 - Whip It
Crack that whip, and Whip It good!

Constructed by the Year 11 team of that year, Whip It was the creation of a new incredibly innovative design. With a technique learnt at their junior secondary college, Flora Hill, the team set about refining their carbon fibre joining work and wanted to build the fastest most stable HPV on the road. The team spent a lot of time designing and constructing a prototype using fibre glass and testing was conducted on this frame and steering design to test just how strong the design would be as there was some doubt as to whether Carbon Fibre could sustain the forces of HPV racing. Team Whip It managed to ride this prototype over and off basically anything; and the frame only eventually broke after one too many rollovers.

Some small modifications were made to the prototype design and construction of the race vehicle begun soon after. Daryl King, Dean Williams and Wilsy constructed almost 6 hours a day – 6 days a week as they raced to complete their vehicle almost four weeks early.
This ensured that the team was fresh and ready to step up to the challenge put out by their compatriots: The Battered Sav.

Whip It had a most memorable Display and Presentation too, which saw a rendition of the Cold Chisel classic: ‘Working Class Man’, remastered to the words of ‘Carbon Fibre Frame’. Move over Jimmy, these boys deserved an Aria.

After a qualifying that saw both the Sav and Whip It running as smooth as silk, race day came and Whip It rode a solid and calculated race.

They did manage to roll the vehicle at least once though, and the battle scars were beginning to show by race end.

Whip It won the award for best Design and Construction in its class, with the innovative design and quality workmanship obviously impressing the judges.

Whip It was a super slick vehicle, but words are one thing, its the footage that will make you believe:

Although Whip It did not win the trial, it has played a very important part of Bendigo Youth Racing’s history. It was this vehicle that reassured people that carbon was strong enough to survive a race, provided the design was right and the joints were good.
