2001 - The Battered Sav
On its day, the 'Sav' was unstoppable.

The Battered Sav team, which consisted of three riders from Molten Chicken, was not only one of the fittest BSSC had ever produced, but also one of the most experienced. In 2000, BSSC had failed – despite winning the race - to take an Overall Category win, which is a total score when the team’s Presentation, Design and Construction and Trial scores are combined. With this in mind, the Battered Sav team pushed the limits of professionalism as they unveiled their brand new lighter vehicle, accompanied by embroided team shirts and a team website.

They also used tinted windows on the vehicle to avoid overheating riders and a multimedia presentation, which included a time-lapse video of the vehicles construction.

After the now traditional rollover in qualifying – a precedent set by Molten Chicken in the year previous – and a good starting position in the top six, the signs looked good for a successful title defence. As the race progressed, the team held firm as the race’s early leaders burnt out and could not keep up the hectic pace. Overnight the race blew out to a 22-lap victory to The Battered Sav – the biggest winning margin in RACV Energy Breakthrough history. In the final half-hour, the Sav set the track alight as it flew to a New Fastest Lap Record of 1:45.7 seconds for 1.3kms, showing that the team still had plenty left in the tank. The Battered Sav travelled 835kms in 24 hours - another new Distance Record – and, after claiming the overall prize in their category, the domination was complete.
