2002 - Lt. Denver
Prior to the drop of the flag, Lt. Denver was fully aware of the weight of pressure and a-tack-ing the course.
|
 |
They arrived at the race with the title of ‘double-defending champions’, and aware that BSSC’s biggest rivals - Highview Christian Community College – had declared that they were back to avenge the 22-lap defeat dished out to them in 2001 Highview claimed that their new vehicle was lighter and faster, and that they had broken the lap record in practice, not once – but twice.
As the pressure mounted, Lt. Denver stood by their hours of training, which had included three sessions a week, rides to Maryborough and Elmore, as well as training on home-made recumbents.
They stood by their vehicle research and development, which saw Denver weigh in 1kg lighter than the Sav.
But above all, Lt. Denver stood by their vehicle’s reliability and their pursuit of fun.

After a calculated start to the race in sweltering conditions, the lead swung between Denver and Highview, who were well clear of Bubaluii in third place. But after two rollovers in half-an-hour, Lt. Denver began to feel the pressure as they sat five laps adrift of the leaders.
But just after midnight, tacks were thrown on the track and the entire race was stopped 30 minutes as teams cleaned their tyres, fixed punctures and changed wheels. BSSC caught 7 tacks in their two vehicles, but Highview was in even more trouble. In the few laps prior to the tacks, Highview had a major crash and their repairs stopped them from rejoining the race with the rest of the field.
After fifteen minutes, Lt. Denver was ahead by 7 laps and led all the way home.
Lt. Denver completed 825 kms in the 24-hours and recorded the fastest lap of the race and -had the tacks not been thrown - were on target to break the Total Distance Record. |
Four members of Lt. Denver have been involved in Bendigo Youth Racing.
