BY-06 - Using science technology and innovation to create the ultimate HPV

With a year away from the sport, Bendigo Youth Racing has returned with a commitment to develop their greatest vehicle to date. BYR is utilising vast amounts of technical data and insight collaborated over the past few years to make a series of improvements to existing designs. See Specs Table

Work goes forth on the new BYR canopy mouldThe most notable improvement to BYR’s design will be the redevelopment of its aero package. This has been completely re-designed using technical data attained at RMIT University’s wind tunnel. Basically, the previous design was quite accurate and impressed the RMIT experts who were present in the tunnel. However the design had plenty of room to be tweaked for a far more efficient package.

The main goals of the design modifications are to reduce frontal area (by around 8%) and reduce separation around the tail, wheels and exit vents. With the mould now constructed it will soon be evident as to the gains achieved when the new design is to be tested in early August.

Thanks to the modified aero package, other sections of the vehicle have also undergone significant changes. The most notable resulting changes are in the front wheel assembly and changing process. The new design features slimmer, BYR-machined hubs, carbon/aluminium kingpins and a remodelled cross member design. The size of the front wheels has also changed along with the materials used in the hubs and kingpins.

BYR prides itself on its ideal: “those who build the vehicle race the vehicle” and for this reason each riding member plays a fundamental role in the vehicle’s construction. As well as designing and constructing BY-06, BYR have aided local Bendigo schools in their vehicle designs through BYR Assist. This program has helped to create a healthy and diverse HPV community in the Bendigo region.
